The US Department of Justice (DOJ) issued a press release announcing that Paige A. Thompson, former Amazon Web Services (AWS) engineer who gained illicit access to sensitive data belonging to Capital One customers, has been convicted. Thompson was found guilty of wire fraud, five counts of unauthorized access to a protected computer, and damaging a protected computer. She is scheduled for sentencing in September 2022. Wire fraud convictions can lead to a sentence of up to 20 years in prison. The breach affected more than 100 million customers of the financial institution Capital One across the US and Canada. Due to the data breach, Capital One was fined USD 80 million and settled related customer lawsuits for USD 190 million. Find the DOJ press release here.
